What Is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An air source heat pump is a renewable heating system that draws warmth from the outside air - even on cold days - and uses it to heat your home and hot water. Instead of burning fuel like a gas boiler, it works by transferring ambient air energy through a process of compression and heat exchange.

ASHPs can provide heating via underfloor systems or radiators and many models can also reverse in summer to offer cooling, giving you year-round temperature control with one system.

How Do Air Source Heat Pumps Work?

1. Air is drawn into the unit from outside

The outdoor unit absorbs heat from the air using a refrigerant fluid.

2. The refrigerant is compressed

This increases its temperature significantly.

The system works in four simple steps:

3. Heat is transferred to your home

The high-temperature refrigerant passes through a heat exchanger, warming your radiators, underfloor system, or hot water tank.

4. The process repeats

The refrigerant cools, returns to the outdoor unit, and the cycle begins again.

Why Choose an Air Source Heat Pump for Your Home?

Air source heat pumps are incredibly efficient, generating up to three times more energy than they consume. That means lower bills and long-term savings—especially important as energy prices continue to rise.

By using renewable air energy rather than fossil fuels, ASHPs dramatically reduce your household’s carbon emissions.

Eligible homeowners in Kent and Sussex can receive up to £7,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to support their switch to heat pump technology.
Installation and upgrade works are also currently zero VAT.

Air source heat pumps can be fitted as part of a new energy-efficient home or installed as a replacement for older heating systems. All that’s needed is adequate outdoor space and good home insulation.

Is an Air Source Heat Pump Right for You?

While air source heat pumps work well for most homes in Kent and Sussex, there are a few factors to consider:

Outdoor Space: You’ll need space for the external unit, typically the size of a small washing machine.

Insulation: The better insulated your home, the more efficient your system will be.

Hot Water Demand: Systems can be sized to meet your household’s needs.

Our team will carry out a free consultation and technical survey to ensure your home is a good fit and the system is properly sized.
