Bivalent Heating Systems

A bivalent heating system, also known as a hybrid heating system, combines a heat pump with another heat source such as a gas, oil or LPG boiler. It’s the perfect solution for homes and commercial buildings in Kent and Sussex that want to improve energy efficiency without completely removing their existing heating system.

At Wells Renewables, we specialise in designing and installing bivalent systems that deliver reliable heating, lower emissions, and long-term savings, backed by over 20 years of experience and full Gas Safe and OFTEC registration.

What Is a Bivalent Heating System?

A bivalent system pairs a heat pump with a traditional boiler to create a flexible, two-source heating setup. This hybrid approach allows your home or building to use the most efficient or cost-effective energy source depending on the conditions.

For example, the heat pump may do most of the work during milder weather, while the boiler kicks in during very cold temperatures or to meet high hot water demand.

Two Sources. One Smart System.

Bivalent systems are designed to automatically switch between the heat pump and boiler, or operate in tandem when required, delivering reliable comfort, whatever the weather.

Increased Efficiency

Using the heat pump during milder weather drastically cuts energy usage, only switching to the boiler when it’s needed most.

Lower Running Costs

By prioritising the heat pump, you reduce reliance on expensive fossil fuels, which can lead to significant savings over time.

More Sustainable Heating

Even if your boiler remains, your overall carbon footprint is lowered thanks to the contribution of renewable heat from the pump.

Smart Heating Control

Our systems come with smart controls that automatically choose the most efficient energy source based on temperature and demand.

When Is a Bivalent System the Right Choice?

Modern Interior Design

Not all properties are suitable for full heat pump conversion. That’s where bivalent systems shine. They’re ideal if:

  • You live in a large or older home with high heat demand

  • You want to lower carbon emissions but keep your existing boiler

  • You have limited insulation and want a phased approach to upgrading

  • You’re planning to modernise in stages

Whether you have a gas, oil or LPG boiler, our engineers can integrate it seamlessly with a modern air source heat pump.
