Common Heat Pump Problems and How to Spot Them Early

Heat pumps are reliable systems, but they do show early warning signs when something isn't right. Knowing what to look for - unusual noises, rising energy bills, a system that keeps cycling on and off, or reduced heat output means you can act before a small issue becomes an expensive repair.


What Are the Most Common Heat Pump Warning Signs?


Unusual noises

A well-functioning heat pump runs quietly. If you start to hear grinding, rattling, buzzing, or banging from the indoor or outdoor unit, don't ignore it. Rattling can indicate a loose panel or debris around the outdoor fan. Grinding or banging points to something more serious, such as a worn bearing or compressor problem, and needs a professional to look at it promptly.


Short cycling

Short cycling is when your heat pump turns on, runs for a few minutes, switches off, and then starts again almost immediately. A system that behaves like this is not reaching the temperature it's aiming for. It puts unnecessary strain on the compressor and often points to an underlying fault such as a refrigerant issue, an incorrectly sized system, or a thermostat problem. If your heat pump is regularly stopping and starting like this, it's time to get it checked.


Rising energy bills without a clear cause

Heat pumps are efficient by design. If your electricity bills have risen noticeably and your usage patterns haven't changed, the system is likely working harder than it should to deliver the same amount of heat. Dirty coils, a refrigerant leak, restricted airflow around the outdoor unit, or a failing component are common causes. This is one of the clearest early signs that a service is needed.


Reduced heat or cooling output

If rooms feel colder than expected, or the heat pump seems to be running but not delivering warmth, the issue could be anywhere from low refrigerant to a failing compressor to poor airflow. For homes in villages like Lamberhurst, Goudhurst and Brenchley that rely on a heat pump as their primary heat source with no gas grid backup, reduced output is worth investigating quickly rather than waiting to see if it improves.


In Winter: What About Ice on the Outdoor Unit?


Ice build-up is specific to cold weather, so if you're reading this in summer it won't be relevant right now, but it's worth knowing about for when the temperatures drop.


A light layer of frost on the outdoor unit during cold, damp weather is completely normal. Your heat pump manages this automatically through a built-in defrost cycle, which typically runs for between 5 and 15 minutes and uses warm refrigerant to clear the ice. During the cycle you might notice the outdoor fan pause, a little steam rising from the unit, and a brief dip in heating output. That's all expected behaviour.


What isn't normal is a unit encased in heavy ice that isn't clearing, a defrost cycle running almost constantly, or ice spreading to the refrigerant pipework. Those point to a fault in the defrost system, low refrigerant, a blocked drain, or restricted airflow caused by debris or nearby fencing. Clearing the area around the unit is a check you can do yourself. If the ice persists after that, switch the system off and call an engineer.


Quick checks you can do yourself

Check that the outdoor unit is clear of leaves, debris and any objects that could restrict airflow. Make sure there's at least 30cm of clearance on all sides. Check that the filter (where accessible) is clean. If a noise or performance issue persists after these checks, call an engineer rather than leaving it to see if it resolves.


When Should You Call an Engineer?

Some issues are straightforward enough to check for yourself. But for anything involving the refrigerant, the compressor, or the defrost control system, you'll need a qualified heat pump engineer. Attempting to top up refrigerant yourself, for example, is not legal without F-Gas certification.

As a rule of thumb: if the symptom has persisted for more than a day or two and your own checks haven't resolved it, call an engineer. Catching a fault early nearly always costs less than dealing with a full breakdown in the middle of a cold spell.

How Often Should a Heat Pump Be Serviced?

Annual servicing is recommended for all heat pump installations in the UK.
